Herman Brood Museum opens new exhibition with photos of Job Boersma

ZWOLLE, October 13, 2023 – The Herman Brood Museum in Zwolle responds to the current Barbie craze in the Netherlands with the new exhibition 'Brood Meets Barbie'. In it, the photos that photographer Job Boersma took as part of his 'Barbie-de-Luxe' project are combined with the colorful and expressive paintings of the Dutch rock legend.

In addition, part of Boersma's enormous collection of 250 Barbie dolls is shown. The exhibition will open on Thursday evening, October 19, and can be seen in the museum until the end of March 2024. “He offers visitors a unique view of the meeting between two iconic figures,” says director Ivo de Lange of the Herman Brood Museum.

Photographer and artist Job Boersma worked for various magazines such as Viva, Mercedes Magazine, Playboy, Zin, Libelle, Webber, Hair Today, Veronica and many more. In 2010 he set up the first sustainable, socially responsible and funny magazine PulpdeLuxeMagazine. In 2021 he surprised with his playful photo project 'Dinky Toys-de-Luxe', in which he portrayed the miniature cars of the past - such as Dinky Toys, Corgi Toys and Matchbox - in large still lifes, each with its own story.

His new photo project 'Barbie-de-Luxe' is a logical continuation. Boersma started photographing and portraying Barbie dolls two years ago. This year a real hype broke out around Barbie, as a result of the feature film. The photo series fits in nicely with this.

The choice for an exhibition in the Herman Brood Museum is an obvious one. In addition to the photos, part of Boersma's enormous collection of 250 Barbie dolls is also shown there. “Brood and Barbie are two icons who both do their own thing. Pop art par excellence,” says De Lange. "Here we show a beautiful cross-section of the current art project Barbie-de-Luxe. There is a profound story behind every work of art.”

The exhibition highlights Herman Brood's artistic vision, combined with the popular culture that Barbie represents. De Lange: "It not only offers a visual experience, but also provides insight into the sources of inspiration behind the work of both artists. It celebrates their individuality and creativity, highlighting their influence on pop culture and art.”
